The trek starts from Rongai Gate, north of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is a less crowded route and some people pick this route because of its remoteness. The scenery is not as varied as other routes but you’ll have a nice view of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.

It’s one of the easiest routes but it doesn’t offer the best acclimatization (chance to climb higher and sleep low).

We recommend 5 days for experienced climbers and 6, 7, and even 8 for inexperienced climbers for the best acclimatization results.

The route descends via Marangu (or the Coca Cola route).

Day 6: To summit, you’ll wake up around 23.5 hours, and after some tea and biscuits, you’ll shuffle off into the night. This is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 meters/16,896 feet), also a good resting spot.

The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5,681 meters/16,896 feet), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring great physical and mental effort. It’s probably the most demanding section of the entire route.

From Gillman’s Point you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5,895 meters/19,340 feet), the highest point in Africa. Once you reach it, you’ll feel total exhilaration and satisfaction – you made it. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you can spend taking photographs, before the 3-hour descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest followed by your descent to Horombo Hut (3 hours) where you will stay overnight.

The descent to Horombo Hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14 hours. Later in the evening you’ll enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and well-earned sleep.

  • Destination: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
  • Elevation: 4,700 meters/15,420 feet to 5,895 meters/19,340 feet to 3,720 meters/18,652 feet

  • Hiking Time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru, 6 hours to descend to Horombo Hut
  • Habitat: Icefield
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 7: After breakfast, you’ll continue your descent (6 hours), passing Mandara Hut, down to the Marangu Gate. At Marangu Gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman’s Point (5,685 meters/18,652 feet) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) receive gold certificates. We’ll drive you back to Arusha or Moshi where your trekking tour ends with sweet memories.

  • Destination: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
